Sarasota Maternity Photographer for Beach Sessions

If the beach is not your setting, there is a quiet private location with palms, greenery and a pool that I use by arrangement. Either way, the session is built around you, and every finished photograph is edited individually.

Maternity photos on the Sarasota coast

A studio session and a beach session are two different things, and I am not going to tell you one is better. I can only tell you what happens outdoors.

On the beach you can walk, turn, stop and walk again. The light changes every few minutes as the sun drops toward the Gulf. Behind you there is water, sky, a long shoreline, sometimes palms and sea grass, and all of it shifts as we move. So one hour gives me directed portraits where I place you in the light, and it also gives me the moments in between: a hand on the belly while you look at the water, a laugh with your partner, a child running back to you.

Some photographs are deliberate. Some simply happen while we walk. You do not need to know how to pose.

When should we schedule maternity photos?

My own preference as a photographer is around 28 to 30 weeks, give or take a couple of weeks. By then the pregnancy is clearly visible, the shape photographs well, and most women are still comfortable walking on sand for an outdoor session.

That is a photographic preference, not a rule. Earlier or later, we plan around where you are. Anything about how you feel physically, or whether an outdoor session is right for you at a given stage, is a question for your medical provider, not for me.

Beach, palms or poolside?

For some clients the beach is not the right setting. They want privacy, they prefer greenery to open sand, or they like the look of palms and a pool at sunset.

For them I have a private location that I use by arrangement: a quiet tropical setting with large palms, landscaped greenery, a pool and a retro-style, Mediterranean-inspired clubhouse. There are few or no strangers around. It is not a studio, and you do not have to enter the pool. I have photographed maternity sessions there in the last light of the day, and the palms and the water give the photographs a very different feel from the open Gulf.

Which Sarasota beach works best?

I photograph maternity sessions on Siesta Key, Lido Key and Longboat Key, and occasionally on other beaches when the session calls for it. I would not say one of them is always best. The right one depends on where you are staying, how far you want to walk in the sand, how many people are likely to be around, where the sun sets that evening and the style you want.

Siesta Key has the wide, pale sand and the most open sky. Lido Key is a shorter drive from downtown Sarasota and often a little calmer. Longboat Key is narrower and quieter, with more sea grass. Once I know where you are staying and what you want, I suggest a beach and a meeting point.

Why I like the last light of the day

I usually start a maternity session about 30 to 40 minutes before sunset. The sun is low over the Gulf, the light is warm and comes from the side, which is what shapes the body in a photograph. This is where most of the portraits with your partner or children happen.

Then the sun goes down, and I do not stop. I especially like the few minutes after the sun disappears. The sky is still holding its last light, but the beach itself becomes quieter and darker. That gives me a chance to make more graphic photographs using the outline of the body and the remaining light behind it.

When the sky cooperates, we typically keep working for about ten more minutes after sunset. That is not a timetable, it is just how my sessions tend to go, and I am not watching a stopwatch when the light and the moments are working.

Come alone or bring the people who matter to you

Come alone, bring your partner, include your children, or make it a small family session built around your pregnancy.

Some women want the session focused entirely on themselves. Others bring a partner. Some make it a maternity and family session with the children, and occasionally a mother or a sister joins. All of that is fine, and there is no extra charge for a partner or children within a normal maternity session.

I build the session around who actually comes, with no minute-by-minute schedule. If your family is there, I still make sure there are photographs of you on your own. Groups larger than about five people start to work more like a family session, so write to me first and we plan it properly.

What to wear for beach maternity photos

I do not provide dresses or a wardrobe, so what you bring is what we photograph. A few things I have noticed over many sessions on these beaches.

Softer colors and pastels work well against the sand and the water. Neon and very saturated colors take over the frame. White is not forbidden, but it can blend into the pale sand, so with white I use the water, the sky or greenery as the background. If your family joins, keep busy patterns to a minimum.

A fitted dress shows the shape clearly. A flowing dress moves in the Gulf breeze and gives a different photograph. Neither is better, and you are welcome to bring both. What matters most is that you feel comfortable and can walk on sand. You do not need to buy an expensive dress for this session.

One small detail people sometimes forget is the manicure. Hands appear in a lot of maternity photographs, so I usually recommend keeping nails clean and the color relatively soft. A very bright manicure can become one of the strongest visual elements in a close photograph.

Weekday or weekend?

If your dates are flexible, I recommend a weekday. The beaches are calmer and there are fewer people in the background. Weekends are absolutely possible, and many of my sessions happen on weekends. What happens if the beach is crowded?

Sarasota beaches get busy, especially around sunset in season. Even on a busy beach, I can work around the crowd while we shoot and clean distracting people from finished photographs when needed. It rarely changes what the finished photographs look like.

What happens if it rains?

I watch the actual conditions on the day, not the rain icon in the forecast. In Florida, showers move through quickly, and an afternoon storm often clears before sunset. Sometimes we wait out a short shower and shoot afterward. If the weather genuinely does not give us a workable session, we move it to the nearest available date that works for you.

How much does a maternity session cost?

Maternity sessions are currently $400 on a weekday, and $500 for a Friday to Sunday sunset. The price covers an hour timed to the last of the light, up to five people in the photographs, and about 70 edited photographs delivered as an online gallery, usually within 2 to 5 days.
