We work through the details by message before the day - the beach, the time, who else is involved, what happens afterward. On the day, nothing starts until I know everything is ready. Then you focus on your partner, and I photograph the moment, the first reaction, and the two of you afterward.

I stay out of the way until the proposal happens

The question almost everyone asks first is not about the photographs. It is whether the person they are about to propose to will spot the photographer and figure it out.

A person with a camera on a Sarasota beach is not unusual. The surprise does not fail because a photographer is somewhere on the sand. It fails when the person proposing keeps checking their phone, scans the beach looking for me, or gets visibly nervous trying to confirm that I am ready.

So I take that job away from you. Everything that can be decided is decided before the day. Before anything starts, I make sure we are both in place and ready. Once everything is set, you can stop thinking about the photography and focus on your partner.

How exactly I stay unnoticed is my part of the job. What you need to know is simpler: I have done this many times on these beaches, and the plan is settled before you walk onto the sand.

How a surprise proposal session works

Before the day. You send me a message and tell me the idea: where you are staying, which beach you are thinking about, whether there is dinner afterward, whether friends, family, a resort or a proposal planner are involved, and whether you want help choosing the place and the time. I help with the photography side: the location, the time of day, the light, and how the moment will unfold so it can be photographed well. All of this happens by message, which is useful when the person you are planning for is sitting next to you.

On the day. Nothing begins until I know everything is ready. Once it is, you have one job, and it is not the photography. I photograph the walk up, the proposal itself, the first reaction, the ring, the hug, and the emotions that follow.

After the yes. You do not need to look for me or look at the camera. I keep photographing the first seconds and minutes as they happen - the talking, the ring, the laughing, the call to family if that is something you want to do right then. When the surprise part is over, we move into a short couple session.

Beaches that work for a proposal

I photograph proposals mainly on three beaches, and each one works a little differently.

Siesta Key is the classic choice: wide, open sand and a long shoreline, with room for portraits afterward. It is a popular beach, and that is not the problem people expect. Other people with phones and cameras make one more photographer easy to ignore. If someone walks through a good frame, I remove them when I edit.

Lido Key is the quieter alternative with a different look, and it gives us more than one kind of background for the portraits after the proposal.

Longboat Key makes sense when you are already staying on the island. The proposal can happen near your resort or on the beach in front of it. Some properties require permission for an outside photographer, so if you are staying at a resort, ask the front desk in advance.

Siesta Key surprise proposals

If you have no strong preference, Siesta Key is usually where I suggest starting. The light in the last hour before sunset is soft, the sand is bright, and there is space to move after the proposal without walking through a crowd. A Siesta Key surprise proposal fits easily into an evening: propose, take a few minutes to breathe, walk along the water for portraits, and still make a dinner reservation.

Timing the light

There is no single right time. The best moment depends on the date, the beach, what you are planning, and what happens after.

Sunset in Sarasota moves a lot through the year. In late November and December the sun can be down before 5:40 in the evening. In late June and early July it sets after 8:30. A plan that works in March is an hour off in December, so I set the time for your actual date, not for a rule of thumb.

We also leave room for the whole sequence: the walk to the spot, the proposal, the reaction, and the portraits afterward. If you have a reservation or family waiting, tell me and I plan backward from it.

What if my partner notices the photographer?

Your partner may see a photographer somewhere on the beach. The important part is that there is no reason to think that photographer has anything to do with the two of you.

That is why the preparation matters more than anything that happens on the sand. When the place and the time are settled in advance, you are not looking for me or checking your phone. You are simply walking on the beach with the person you came with, and that is what keeps the surprise a surprise.

Surprise does not have to mean completely unplanned

Not every proposal I photograph is a secret until the last second, and it does not need to be.

On Longboat Key I photographed a proposal next to a resort where the spot had been prepared in advance. There was a heart laid out on the ground with flameless candles, and inside it an album of the couple's photographs together. He walked her to the spot, they opened the album and went through their photos, smiling. By then she clearly understood that something was happening. That is when he went down on one knee.

I photographed the walk up, the album, her reactions, the proposal, the ring and the first emotions. After the yes, someone from the resort brought two glasses of champagne, and we continued as a regular couple session.

A prepared proposal is a different kind of surprise. She knew something was coming, she did not know when, and she still got the moment and the photographs of it.

If a resort or a proposal-planning company is preparing a setup, send me the plan beforehand. I photograph the setup, your arrival, the proposal and the two of you afterward. They handle the setup. I handle the photography. If you are planning a larger setup on a public beach, check the rules for the specific beach or work with a local proposal-planning company that handles the setup.

If the plan calls for it, I can hold the ring until the moment, and it has happened. Usually, though, I am at a distance and you never have to hand me anything.

What happens after the proposal?

The proposal is the first part of the story, not the whole story.

Once the first emotions settle, the rest of the session is a couple session: a walk along the water, a change of background, portraits, the ring, the two of you together, close-ups, full-length, walking. Nobody has to perform. Most couples are still a little shaky at that point, and it shows in the photographs in the best way.

So you do not come away with one frame of someone on a knee. You come away with the proposal as it happened and photographs of the two of you from the first hour of being engaged.

Rain and backup plans

I do not move a proposal because a weather app shows a rain icon. Florida rain usually comes and goes: it can pour in the afternoon, stop well before sunset, and turn into a clear, good evening. If a short shower is obviously ending, we wait a few minutes. If I arrive and there will clearly be no usable window, I would rather not have you propose in bad conditions, and we look for the nearest time that still works.

With a proposal there is usually more to consider: a dinner reservation, family who flew in, a resort setup, a planner. Tell me about those pieces in advance, and if the weather forces a change, I work around them so the proposal still gets photographed properly.
