A local photographer's guide, month by month
The Best Time for Family Photos on Siesta Key
For most families, the best time for photos on Siesta Key is the last stretch of daylight before sunset, from late October through May. From June to September, especially with toddlers, the early morning is often the better choice: cooler, calmer and ahead of the afternoon storms. Sunset moves by almost three hours across the year, so the month you visit decides the clock.

By Yuriy, a family photographer who works on Siesta Key year round. Sunset times are computed for Siesta Key and checked against the US Naval Observatory, September 2026.

Morning or evening: the best time of day on Siesta Key
From spring to October I photograph on the beach in two windows only: early morning, before the sun climbs, and the last stretch of daylight before sunset.
Evening
The window before sunset
Siesta Key's beach faces the Gulf, so the sun sets over open water in every month of the year. It drops toward the horizon, the light turns warm and comes in low from the side, and for the last half hour it changes every few minutes. My evening start times run every fifteen minutes, from about an hour and forty-five minutes before sunset to just under an hour before it, so an hour-long session ends no later than ten minutes after the sun goes down.
The evening costs something too: more people on the sand, harder parking at weekends, and in summer a sunset close to a toddler's bedtime. For most families the light is worth it.

The ten minutes after sunset
Every evening session ends by ten minutes after sunset, on purpose. Once the sun is below the horizon the sky often holds its strongest color, the light on faces goes soft and even, and the beach empties fast as the sunset crowd walks back to the cars. Usable light lasts about 25 minutes after sunset all year round.
The two photographs show both ends of the window: earlier, while the sky is still bright and a catamaran with a rainbow sail is out behind the family, and then the pink and lilac sky a few minutes after sunset. For that color, pick the latest evening start; for more daylight and a toddler back at the rental earlier, pick an earlier one.

Morning
The window after sunrise
Mornings work differently here. Because the beach faces west, the sun does not come up over the water; it rises behind you, over the island. What a morning gives you is soft, even light, calm water, cool sand and a beach that is close to empty. Parking is easy, and small children who wake at six are at their best by the time we start.
Morning sessions start soon after sunrise in winter and about an hour after it in midsummer, when the sun is up by 6:35. From spring to fall the light is already high and hard by nine, with squinting faces and dark shadows under the eyes, which is why I do not sell midday beach sessions in those months. The morning suits a mini or an hour best. A ninety-minute session fits only the earliest morning start, or the evening.

And in winter?
In winter the sun stays lower and the good light lasts longer, so from December to February the evening window can open earlier, in the middle of the afternoon. The later starts close to sunset are still there. If neither window fits your trip, a pool or a shaded spot at your rental works at any hour; write to me before you book.
He was awesome. Efficient & energetic. We did the photos for our 20 year anniversary & did a 30 min session at 8am. It was perfect. The sky & ocean were gorgeous!

Thank you to Yuriy for some awesome family pics! He scheduled us for the one perfect night it didn't rain last week and the sunset pics turned out beautifully.
Siesta Key season by season
December to February
Winter: early sunsets and long, soft light
The earliest sunsets of the year come from late November into early December, not on the shortest day as most people expect. Daytime highs average 73 to 75 degrees, the days stay dry, and the low sun keeps the light gentle for longer.
It cools down fast once the sun goes, with average lows in the low 50s, so bring a layer for small children. The Gulf is around 66 degrees, so nobody goes in past the ankles.
March to May
Spring: dry, bright and, in March, crowded
March is one of the busiest months on Sarasota's beaches, with spring break on top of the winter season. In March 2026 overall paid lodging in the county was about 81 percent full, according to Visit Sarasota County figures reported by Sarasota Magazine. It changes the plan, not the session. I always meet families at one of the smaller accesses along the key, away from the main beach and its pavilion, and in March that matters more than in any other month. Weekday evenings are calmer than weekends, and a morning avoids the crowd altogether. The 2027 school break dates are on my spring break page.
Rain is light, around two and a half inches a month, mostly in short showers. On the second Sunday of March the clocks spring forward and sunset jumps from about 6:38 to 7:38 pm overnight. By May the days reach the high 80s and the evening sessions run past eight.
June to September
Summer: storms, warm water and early mornings
This is the rainy season. June to September bring about 60 percent of Sarasota's yearly rain, with August the wettest month and highs around 90. The National Weather Service ties the summer storm season to the daily sea breeze, and Visit Sarasota notes that the downpours tend to come in the early afternoon and pass quickly. Some evenings never clear, though, which is why the early morning is the safer summer window: cooler, calm and ahead of the storms.
Summer also brings the calmest winds of the year, water around 86 degrees that children happily stand in, and white quartz sand that stays cool underfoot.
October and November
Fall: the storms fade and the clocks change
October is when the rainy season lets go: rain drops from 6 inches in September to under 3, the water is still around 80 degrees, and the beach is quiet before the winter crowd. September itself is the quietest month on the sand and still inside the storm season, a fair trade if your dates are fixed.
On the first Sunday of November the clocks fall back, and sunset jumps from about 6:48 pm to 5:47 pm overnight. November is the driest month of the year. In mid-November the Siesta Key Crystal Classic sand sculpting festival fills the main beach for a few days.
Siesta Key sunset at Thanksgiving and Christmas
Sunset is around 5:37 pm in Thanksgiving week and just before 5:45 pm at Christmas, so an evening session is over before dinner. Late-November evenings appear in the calendar in late September, Christmas week in late October.
A holiday week is often the one time of year the whole family is on the same beach, grandparents included. If they fly in for a few days, pick an evening early in their stay, so a cloudy night still leaves a spare one.
Dates, card deadlines and the rain rule for each holiday week are in my holiday family photos page.

Sunrise or sunset with toddlers, grandparents and big groups
With toddlers
Children under three set the schedule. In winter the evening works well, because a 5:40 pm sunset finishes before dinner. In June and July sunset is close to 8:30 pm, and a two-year-old is often done before the light is good, so I suggest a morning, when early risers are at their best and the sand is cool. If you choose the evening anyway, a late nap helps more than anything I can do on the beach. I photograph the youngest first, before the meltdown, not after.
He even helped guide us in choosing the ideal time for our kids while also considering the best lighting and avoiding the hottest part of the day. All details I hadn't even thought about.
With grandparents
Heat and walking are the two things to plan around. In summer a morning is kinder than a 90-degree evening; from November to April either window works. I use accesses where the walk from the car to the water takes three to eight minutes, and I tell you about the path before you come. If someone needs firm ground or walks slowly, tell me when you book and I choose the spot around it.

With a big group
There is no minimum length for a large family: you choose an hour or ninety minutes. What a big group needs from the clock is a clean start. With twelve or fourteen people a late start eats into the only light we have, so I photograph everyone together at the beginning, while the light is soft and nobody has wandered off, and split into smaller groups as the sun drops. Ask everyone to arrive five to ten minutes early.
Which window for a big group?
From October to May, the earliest evening start, on a weekday if you can. In summer, a morning is easier on grandparents and small cousins alike. Everything else about how I run a group of ten to twenty, including the price calculator, is on the large families page.

Weekday or weekend evening?
Most families only think about the month. The day of the week changes almost as much on Siesta.
01
Monday to Thursday evenings
A calmer beach, easier parking and the regular price. If your dates are flexible, this is the evening I would pick.
02
Friday to Sunday evening
The window everyone wants, so it is priced higher; the Sessions page shows the current difference. The extra is tied to the sunset light, not to the day, so a Saturday morning costs the same as a Tuesday morning. Parking is harder on those evenings, so give yourself ten extra minutes for it.
03
Sunday evenings
The Siesta Key drum circle gathers at the main Siesta Beach an hour before sunset every Sunday, and in season it draws hundreds of people. It is fun to watch and loud to photograph next to, and it makes Sunday the busiest evening of the week at the main beach: one more reason I meet families at the smaller accesses along the key.
04
Mornings, any day
Mornings are the quietest hours on Siesta by a wide margin, and they cost the same every day of the week.

Wind on the beach
The wind on Siesta changes with the season. According to Weather Spark long-term averages, in mid-summer it mostly blows from the west, off the Gulf and onto the beach, and in winter mostly from the north. November is the windiest month in Sarasota, at around 10 to 11 miles per hour, and July the calmest, at around 6. The windier part of the year runs from mid-September to mid-May.
Wind is not a reason to cancel; hair moving in the breeze is part of a real beach photograph. I turn the family so the wind comes from behind or from the side, and I suggest tying back long hair for the portraits where it matters. A flowing dress looks lovely in a breeze; a very light, short one can be a battle.
If the wind is genuinely strong on your evening, I tell you before we start, and you decide whether we shoot or take another window. Strands of hair across a face cannot always be removed in editing.

Rain, storms and hurricane season
I watch the actual sky on the day, not the rain icon on your phone. In Florida the forecast often looks much worse than the evening turns out, and an afternoon shower very often passes before sunset. Sometimes we wait twenty minutes and shoot in better light than we would have had. If the evening is genuinely gone, I move the session to another morning or evening, and you do not lose your deposit because of weather. There is no reschedule button in the booking system: I move it for you, you just reply to the confirmation email or text me.
In July a storm took one family's evening and we shot the next morning; in August rain did the same to another family, who shot the next day. That is why I suggest booking your photos early in the trip: a session on day two leaves a spare morning or evening.
We had storms roll in on the evening of our shoot and he was very quick to get us rescheduled for the next morning. Love so many of the photos he was able to capture!
Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October, according to the National Hurricane Center. Storms do not skip this coast: in October 2024 Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, as the NHC report records. A direct hit like that is rare, but it is why I watch the tropics as closely as you do.
If a storm really takes your session, it works the same as with rain: we pick a new date. If your plans change for any other reason, a cancellation more than 7 days before the session is refunded in full.
Red tide is the other Gulf word visitors ask about. It does not happen every year, and when it does it tends to appear between late summer and spring. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission publishes a current red tide status map, worth a look a day or two before your session.
How to book the right slot
- 01
Pick the session
A mini session on Siesta Key, an hour or ninety minutes for the family, or a large-family session. Mini sessions are $200 for 15 minutes and $270 for 30, and a family hour is $350, or $450 on a Friday to Sunday evening; the Sessions page always has the current prices.
- 02
Pick a date and a start time
The calendar only offers the windows I actually shoot on that date: mornings, and evening starts worked out from that day's sunset. It opens four months ahead and closes 12 hours before a session.
- 03
Hold it with 30 percent
You pay a 30 percent deposit online and the rest after the session. I send the meeting point with a pin, parking notes and what photographs well there.

Yuriy communicated quickly with me and provided great suggestions for location and timing of our family photo. Timing was perfect & he didn't waste any time. My suggestion is if you're here for the week, book your photo shoot early in the week.
When mini sessions run
Mini sessions run only on Siesta Key, on one stretch of beach, in fixed slots. The 15-minute mini runs every morning and on Monday to Thursday evenings. The 30-minute mini runs at the same times, and from Friday to Sunday it also has a separate sunset slot, priced higher because that is the light everyone wants. On Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day only the 30-minute mini runs, at that higher price.
The difference between 15 and 30 minutes is 15 photos against 35, and how much of the family I have time to see.
A mini suits a small family who wants a few strong photographs without giving up a whole evening, and it is a good way to use a summer morning. Dogs cannot come to a mini: minis run on Siesta Beach, and Sarasota County allows only service animals there. Dogs are welcome on a family session of an hour or longer on a beach where dogs are allowed; the page about family photos with dogs has the details.
The 15-minute times are on the same page.

Best time for Siesta Key family photos: FAQ
What is the best time of day for family photos on Siesta Key?
For most of the year, the last stretch of daylight before sunset, starting from about an hour and forty-five minutes to just under an hour before it; the month table has sunset for every month. From June to September, and with toddlers, often the early morning. Morning or evening compares the two.
Does the sun rise over the water on Siesta Key?
No. The beach faces west, so the sun rises behind you, over the island; the morning window covers what a morning gives instead.
What is the best month for family photos on Siesta Key?
Late October to May, the dry season, with November, February and April the easiest. Season by season has the trade-offs, including March crowds.
Is it too hot for family photos in July and August?
Not in the early morning, which is cooler and calm; in summer I do not book beach sessions in the middle of the day. Summer has the details.
What happens if it rains on the day of our session?
If the evening is genuinely gone, I move the session to another morning or evening and you keep your deposit. Rain, storms and hurricane season explains how I decide.
What time should we arrive for a sunset session?
At your booked start time, not at sunset. Be there five minutes early, five to ten for a big group, and on Friday to Sunday evenings give yourself ten extra minutes for parking.
