Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year in Sarasota
Holiday Family Photos on Siesta Key
Book one hour on the beach while the whole family is in town: from Thanksgiving to New Year the sun sets on Siesta Key between 5:36 and 5:48 pm, so an evening session is over before dinner. Your gallery arrives in 2 to 5 days, in time for holiday cards. Only the holidays themselves cost $100 more; the rest of each holiday week costs what any week costs.

Winter evenings start in the afternoon
In late November and December the sun goes down at about twenty to six, almost three hours earlier than in July. The light is also kinder: the winter sun rides lower all afternoon, about forty degrees above the horizon at noon instead of almost straight overhead in summer, so the light is already soft early in the session. So in December an evening session starts in the afternoon and is over by six. The grandparents in this photo stood at the water in February, in the same low winter sun.
That changes how a holiday day works. You are back at the rental soon after six, children are fed on time, and the evening is still yours.
Mornings and the calendar
Mornings start within an hour of sunrise, on a beach that is close to empty. The calendar runs about four months ahead and closes 12 hours before a session. It shows only the times I actually shoot on your date, so there is nothing to work out yourself.
You won't regret booking with Yuriy! Yuriy was extremely responsive and flexible with our very last minute booking. He made the experience comfortable and fun. And most importantly, the pictures came extremely quickly and are beautiful!

Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year: how each week works
Each week suits a different goal. Thanksgiving week is the one for the Christmas card: the driest month, the earliest sunsets, and a gallery back long before the mailing date. Christmas week is often the week the grandparents fly in. Around New Year, as on any winter day, mornings are the quietest time on the beach.
November
Thanksgiving week in Sarasota
Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, in the week of the earliest sunsets of the year. November is the driest month in Sarasota. A session on the Monday to Wednesday before the dinner gives you the photos before everyone scatters, and the gallery arrives by the end of November, which leaves plenty of room for cards.
On Saturday, November 28, the Siesta Key holiday parade sets off at 5:30 pm, right at sunset, and runs along Beach Road into the village. If your session falls on that evening, leave extra time, and I tell you the easiest way to the meeting point when you book.
December
Christmas week
This is the week when the whole family is most often in one place: grandparents, grown children, cousins. Plan the session for the first evenings after everyone arrives, before the days turn into cooking and visits.
A session in Christmas week is too late for cards mailed before Christmas, and fine for a card that goes out in January. December is also when the winter season begins on the Gulf, and the island gets busier as the month goes on. Here is how crowded it gets, and where I meet families instead.
Late December and January
New Year
Sunset is already twelve minutes later than at Thanksgiving. The calendar runs about four months ahead, so the last days of December are bookable well before the first days of January appear.
If your family stays into the first week of January, a morning is often the quietest choice: the beach is nearly empty, and the light is soft from the first minute.
The holiday card photo
Many holiday families have one picture in mind: everyone together, everyone looking at the camera, nobody blinking. With five people that is easy. With twelve, one person always blinks, one toddler always looks away. I shoot the group photos in quick bursts, many frames in a few seconds, and then pick the one where every face works. That is how the card photo of a big family gets made, and it is why I photograph everyone together first, while the light is soft and nobody has wandered off.
The color stays natural. Every photo is edited lightly by hand, so people look like themselves: faces stay yours, colors stay true. When the sun is behind you over the Gulf, I use a little flash, only enough to keep faces bright while the sunset stays in the sky. The card should look like your family, not like a filter.
We had a wonderful experience with Yuriy. He was punctual, professional and clearly committed to making sure everything went smoothly. The photos turned out beautiful, and we were amazed that they were ready in just 3 days.

Will the photos be ready for Christmas cards?
2-5 days
From your session to the finished gallery. Every photo is edited by hand, and there is no extra charge for this speed: it is how I always work.
Between the gallery and the mailbox sits your card printer, which needs several days of its own to print and ship.
December 17
The last day the US Postal Service recommends for mailing cards by First-Class Mail to arrive by Christmas in the lower 48 states, according to its 2026 holiday mailing dates.
Working back, a session in Thanksgiving week leaves comfortable room for a Christmas card, and one in the first days of December still works if you order the prints quickly. For a card that goes out in January, any session up to Christmas week works.
A big family holiday: everyone in one frame
A holiday is often the one week a year when three generations stand on the same beach. For ten to twenty people the session runs in a set order: everyone together first, then each household, the grandparents with the grandchildren, the cousins, and the little ones before the meltdown, the same order I use for every large family. If a grandparent walks slowly, tell me when you book and I choose an access with a short walk and firm ground. If someone needs a wheelchair on the sand, the main Siesta Beach pavilion lends beach wheelchairs for free; that is a different spot from the small accesses I usually use, so tell me when you book and I plan the meeting point around it. With several cars, the free Siesta Key Breeze trolley runs from Siesta Village to the south end of the island from 8 am to 10 pm, with changed hours on some holidays.
From nine people the Friday to Sunday evening and the holidays cost nothing extra, so if a time on Christmas Day, New Year's Day or another holiday is open in the calendar, a big family pays the weekday price for it. The evening of December 26 is the exception: there the extra shrinks with every person and is gone from eleven of you. The calculator applies this by itself and shows your whole price for up to twenty people before you pay. The two families in these photos stood on Siesta Key and on Anna Maria Island.

His communications were prompt and told us exactly when and where to meet him. I hate having my pictures taken but Yuriy actually made it fun.
At the rental house instead of the beach
Many holiday families rent one big house for everyone, often with a pool. If the beach in the evening does not fit your plans, because a grandparent cannot walk on sand or the day is already full of cooking, I can photograph you by the pool at your rental or indoors, and there the hour does not depend on the sun.
This big family met me at their rental on a bright day: the pool, the waterfall and the canal behind them told the story of the trip as much as any beach. If you want a time that is not in the calendar, write to me before you book with the address and how many of you there are.

A rental on Siesta or Lido Key or in Sarasota has no travel fee. On Longboat Key, in Venice or mainland Bradenton the session adds $50, on Anna Maria Island or Bradenton Beach $70.
What to wear for holiday photos on the beach
The sand on Siesta is bright white quartz, so almost any color works, and solid white blends into it. For a holiday card, think of one or two holiday colors as an accent rather than red and green from head to toe: a soft red dress for one child, a deep green shirt for one parent, the rest in light neutrals. Coordinate, do not match. In a big family, give each household its own color from one shared palette: the group photo reads as one family, and each household still stands out in its own frames. If your family loves white for the card, wear it anyway: it still looks lovely against the water and the sky, and I work with the angles. Above all, wear what feels like you; comfortable people photograph better than perfectly dressed ones.
December evenings cool down fast once the sun goes, with average lows around 55 degrees, so bring a cardigan or a linen overshirt in your colors for small children and grandparents. Everyone goes barefoot on the sand. I do not bring props, hats or decorations: the Gulf at sunset is the backdrop.
Palettes for families of every size, and what to avoid, are in my guide to what to wear for beach family photos.

Holiday weather on Siesta Key, and the rain rule
The holidays fall in the dry season. By the National Weather Service 1991-2020 normals for Sarasota-Bradenton, November averages 80 degrees by day and 60 at night with 1.8 inches of rain, the driest month of the year. December averages 75 and 55 with 2.3 inches, January 73 and 52. Hurricane season ends on November 30.
The Gulf is cool by now: about 67 degrees on average in December at NOAA's Venice station, the nearest one to Siesta. Children paddle at the edge for a few frames; nobody needs to go in past the ankles.
I watch the actual sky on the day, not the rain icon on your phone. If the evening is genuinely gone, I move the session to another morning or evening and you do not lose your deposit because of weather. There is no reschedule button in the booking system: reply to the confirmation email or text me, and I move it for you. A cancellation for any other reason more than 7 days before the session is refunded in full. What happens on a last evening, mid-session rain and hurricanes is in my rain guide.
November is also one of the windiest months of the year here. Wind is not a reason to cancel; I turn the family so the breeze comes from behind or the side. The best time guide has sunset, rain and wind for every month.
Small children on a holiday trip
New time zone, late dinners, cousins everywhere: holiday toddlers are rarely in a posing mood. The early winter sunset helps, because the session ends before bedtime instead of during it. I photograph the youngest first, keep them moving, and let them be loud. Some of the best frames of the hour come when a child refuses to stand still.
If you can, keep the afternoon nap on the day of the session: it does more for the photos than anything I can do on the sand, and a snack in a parent's pocket buys a few more happy minutes. Nobody has to look at the camera all the time; a toddler on a grandfather's shoulders, looking at the water, is a holiday photo too.
I was so excited to get these pictures done...but some little members of the family aren't always as excited. Yuriy was great from the beginning! Love love love how the pictures turned out. After the photo shoot I thought he may have gotten one or two good ones....wow I was wrong.

What holiday family photos cost
$350 an hour, up to five people
$450 on a Friday to Sunday evening or a holiday
The first price is for mornings and Monday to Thursday evenings, the second for the Friday to Sunday evening window and for any time on the five holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
One evening costs more again: the evening of Saturday, December 26, the day after Christmas, is $200 more, so the family hour that evening is $550. The morning of December 26 costs what any Saturday morning costs. The rest of Thanksgiving week, Christmas week and New Year week costs what any other week costs. For a bigger family the price grows with the number of people, and the large family calculator shows your exact price before you pay. Longer sessions, what is included and the current prices always live on the Sessions page.
Just the card photo? A mini session on Siesta Key
If it is just you and the kids and you want one strong card photo without giving up a holiday evening, a 30-minute mini on Siesta Key is enough: 35 edited photos, on one quiet stretch of beach, in fixed slots every morning and on Monday to Thursday evenings. The 30-minute mini also runs on a Friday to Sunday evening and on the holidays themselves, for $370 instead of $270. On the holidays the 15-minute mini does not run. The 15-minute mini gives 15 photos.
The difference between them is how much of the family I have time to see, not the quality. The 15-minute mini covers four people and the 30-minute five; more can be added in the booking, up to seven and ten, with the price shown before you pay. With grandparents and cousins, though, the hour gives every household its own frames.
We meet right by the water next to the sailboats, the masts you see in this photo, two or three minutes on one path from free parking. In the evening that parking fills before sunset, so come ten minutes early: I photograph one family right before you and one right after, and each mini starts and ends on time.
$200 for 15 min · $270 for 30 · $370 on a weekend evening or holiday · $470 on the evening of December 26, on Siesta Key only. Where I meet families on the island, and the short walk to the water, is on my Siesta Key family photographer page.

Holiday family photos on Siesta Key: FAQ
Do you photograph on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or New Year's Day?
The calendar is the answer. If a time shows on the holiday itself, it is open and you can book it; if it does not, that day is not. I suggest an evening earlier in the week, so a cloudy night still leaves a spare one.
Is there a holiday surcharge?
Only on the holidays themselves. On Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day every time costs more, mornings included: the family hour is $450 instead of $350. The rest of Thanksgiving week, Christmas week and New Year week costs what any other week costs, with one exception: the evening of Saturday, December 26 is $200 more, $550 for the family hour, while that morning costs what any Saturday morning costs. The price section has the numbers.
What time is sunset at Christmas on Siesta Key?
About 5:43 pm on December 24 and 25, 2026, and 5:47 to 5:48 pm on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. At Thanksgiving it is about 5:36 pm, the earliest of the year. An evening session ends no later than ten minutes after sunset.
How crowded is Siesta Key at Thanksgiving and Christmas?
December to March is the high season on the Gulf, so expect company on the beach. The main Siesta Beach lot has more than 950 free spaces; I meet families at the small beach accesses instead, a short walk from the water, and send the meeting point with parking notes as soon as you book. Mornings are the quietest time; soon after sunrise the beach is nearly empty. The one evening to plan around is Saturday, November 28, when the holiday parade runs along Beach Road at sunset.
Will our photos be ready in time for Christmas cards?
The gallery arrives in 2 to 5 days. The US Postal Service recommends mailing cards by December 17 to arrive by Christmas, so a session in Thanksgiving week leaves comfortable room. The card timing section works it through week by week.
How far ahead can we book?
The calendar runs about four months ahead and closes 12 hours before a session. Each holiday week appears about four months before it. If you are coming for New Year and see no January dates yet, they are added later, so check back or text me.
Can you bring Santa hats or a Christmas tree to the beach?
No, I do not bring props or decorations. The photos are about your family, with the Gulf and the sunset behind you. For holiday colors, see what to wear.
What if it rains on our only evening?
If the evening is genuinely gone, I move the session to another morning or evening and you keep your deposit. Reply to the confirmation email or text me; there is no reschedule button, I move it for you.
How many people can we book for?
Up to twenty people online on the large families calculator, which shows your whole price before you pay. For a bigger group, write to me with your dates.
One evening on the beach, all of you together
Pick your holiday dates and the calendar shows the mornings and evenings that work for them, with the full price before you pay.
